Retold by Lynne Benton

Illustraed by Fred Blunt

“Now there’s less room! What can I do? ”

Owl smiled.“Ask all your friends too. ”

“Really ? ” said Rabbit. But he did.

All his friends came.

He ran to Owl.

“There’s no room for me! ”

“Tell them It’s time to go home.”

The Spring Rabbit

by Joyce Dunbar

Smudge is a white rabbit. It lives in the woods.

The woods are a small forest.

Smudge has no brother or sister.

"Look, Mum, they all have brothers and sisters. Can I have a brother or sister?" He asks his mother.

"Sure. But you need to wait. Wait till next spring." Mum says.

"Next spring? That will be a long time."

It's autumn. Some twigs and leaves fall down from trees.

One morning, Smudge sees other rabbits play with tree twigs and tree leaves.

So he makes a rabbit with twigs and leaves.

"You can be my brother and run with me on the hill," Smudge says.

But the twigs-and-leaves rabbit doesn't talk.

The wind blows and the leaves fly away.

"Oh, no! My brother!"

There are only some twigs now.

A mouse says to Smudge, "Don't worry. You will have a brother next spring."

But spring is a long time away.

It's winter now.

Smudge makes a snow bunny.

"You can be my sister. You can play with snow balls." Smudge says.

But the snow bunny can't play games with him.

It's warm the next day and the snow bunny melts.

A robin bird says to Smudge, "Next spring, you are going to have a sister."

But when will spring come?

All the snow melts.

Smudge makes a rabbit with mud.

"You can be my little brother," says Smudge.

"We can jump in the puddle together. We can play with water."

But the mud rabbit can't play in the water.

One day, it is rainy.

And the rain washes the mud rabbit away.

"Don't worry. You will have a little bother next spring." the frog says to him.

Oh, the trees are a little green.

Spring is here.

"But where is my brother?" Smudge is looking for his little brother.

"Is he in the big tree?"

Smudge looks into a tree-hole.

He sees the mouse family.

There are many baby mice.

But no baby rabbits.

He looks in the grass and the twigs.

He sees six eggs.

"These are my eggs. There is no bunny here." the robin bird says.

Smudge goes to the lake.

Is his little brother there?

He sees a lot of black tadpoles in the water.

The frogs say, "Our babies live in the water."

But rabbits don't live in the water.

Smudge is sad.

Where is his little brother?

How can he find him?

Smudge can't find a brother or sister.

So he goes home.

"Spring is here, but I can't find my baby brother or sister," he says to his mother.

Mom says, "Look there!"

There are three little beds.

"You have two baby brothers and one baby sister." Smudge is so happy.

He jumps, sings and dances.

Some weeks later, ...

His baby brothers and sister can run and jump.

They go outside with Smudge.

Smudge makes a rabbit with twigs and green grass.

All the animals come and play with them.

Now spring really comes.

By Anna Dewdney

Nobunny's Perfect

By Anna Dewdney

Every little bunny's good.

They mostly do the things they should.

But sometimes feeling sad or mad,

Can make a little bunny...

BAD!

Bad bunnies grab.

They do not share.

They hit and kick.

They don't play fair.

They slurp their juice.

They scream and shout.

They burp and spit their carrots out.

No "please" or "thanks" or"pardon me."

They fuss and whine and disagree.

They scratch each other, squeal and fight.

Instead of using words they BITE.

Nobunny's perfect,that is true~~~~~~

but aren't you glad this isn't YOU

Good bunnies try to do what's right.

They use their words.

They NEVER bite.

Instead of grabbing, they say " please."

They're nice to friends and they don't tease.

They follow rules.

They take their time .

They do not push.

They wait in line.

They say" hello" and wave "good-bye."

They give a hug when someone cries.

And when the day is warm and sunny...

they share it with another bunny.

No bad bunnies No rude rabbits

Use your manners,have good habits.

Be polite and kind and true.

They hit and kick.

They don't play fair.

You're a Hero, Daley B

By Jon Blake

Dali doesn’t know who he is.

“Am I a monkey? Am I a koala? Am I a porcupine?”

Dali doesn’t know where he should live.

“Should I live in a cave?

Should I live in a bird’s nest?

Should I live on a spider web?”

Dali doesn’t know what he should eat.

“Should I eat fish?”

Should I eat potatoes? Should I eat worms?”

Dali doesn’t know why his feet are so big.

“Is it for water-skiing?”

“Is it for mice to sit on?”

Is it a rain shield?

Dali sees birds living on trees, so he decides to live on a tree.

Dali sees squirrels eating acorns, so he decides to eat acorns.

But he still doesn’t know why his feet are so big.

One day, all the rabbits in the forest came to Dali’s tree in a panic.

“You’ve got to come down NOW, Dali!” They shouted.

“Jessie’s coming!”

“Who’s Jessie?”

Dali asked.

The rabbits had no time to answer questions, they dispersed all over the lawn and disappeared into their rabbit holes.

Dali stayed in his tree, ate another acorn, still wondering about his feet.

Jessie slowly crept out of the shrubs.

Her teeth were as sharp as shards of glass.

Her eyes were as agile as fleas.

Jessie went around and and around the rabbit holes, but didn’t see even one rabbit.

Jessie looked up, Dali waved.

Jessie began to climb the tree, all the rabbits raised their heads above the hole and shuddered all over.

“Hello.” Dali said to Jessie.

“Are you a beaver?

Are you an elephant?

Are you a platypus?”

Jessie crept closer and closer.

“No, my friend,” she said in a low voice

“I’m a weasel!”

“Do you live ina pond?

Do you live on the embankment?

Do you live in the doghouse?”

Jessie came even closer.

“No, my friend.”

She said whilehissing.

“I live in the darkest corner of the forest.”

“Do you eat cabbage?

Do you eat insects? Do you eat fruit?”

Jessie came right next to Dali.

“No,my friend.”

She said in a terrible voice

“I eat rabbits! Rabbits like YOU!”

Dali was shocked.

“I’m a … rabbit?”

Jessie nodded, licked her lips and jumped!

Without even thinking, Dali turned around as fast aslightning, kicked with his super large feet.

Jessie flew across the sky, to far,far away, back to wherever he came from.

All the rabbits were jumping upand down, cheering, hugging each other.

“You’re a hero, Dali!”

They shouted.

“That’s weird,” Dali said, “I thought I was a rabbit.”

by Anita Loughrey and Daniel Howarth

Rabbit's Spring Adventure

by Anita Loughrey and Daniel Howarth

Rabbit poked his nose out of his warren.

Bright yellow and purple flowers swayed in the breeze.

Rabbit's big sister had told him it was finally spring.

But what did that mean?He had to find out!

Rabbit hopped into the wood.

Blossom covered the trees and grass.

Tiny green buds were on the branches of the trees.

Rabbit hopped so far that he was soon tired out.

He stopped and looked around.

Where was he?

"Oh no!" cried Rabbit.

"I'm lost!"

Suddenly, Rabbit jumped up and thumped his back foot. He could hear splashing.

"What's that sound?" he asked, and hopped to the pond.

the pond, Frog was jumping on the lily pads.

Rabbit peered into the water. He saw some frogspawn bobbing on the surface.

"What's wrong, Rabbit?" asked Frog.

"I'm lost," said Rabbit.

"Do you know where my home is?" But Frog didn't.

Rabbit hopped to the cornfield, where seeds were sprouting into new plants.

Rabbit heard a rustle.

"What's that sound?" he asked.

Mouse scampered out of the corn.

She had woken up from her long winter sleep and was searching for food.

"Do you know where my home is?" asked Rabbit.

But Mouse didn't.

Rabbit hopped back into the wood.

He could hear chirping in the trees.

"What's that sound?" he asked.

He looked up and saw Owl watching over her nest.

Her little owlets had hatched.

"Do you know where my home is?"asked Rabbit.

"It can't be far away," said Owl.

"Everything looks so different," said Rabbit.

"And there are so many new sounds. I don't think I'll ever get home."

"Close your eyes and listen carefully," said Owl.

"I'm sure you'll hear something familiar."

So Rabbit did...

He could hear laughter nearby!

"What's that sound?"he asked.

Rabbit hopped through the trees and soon saw his brothers and sisters playing outside in the sunshine.

Rabbit's big sister hopped over to him.

"Did you find out what happens in spring?" she asked.

"Spring is very beautiful," said Rabbit.

"But it will take some getting used to!"

My Friend Rabbit

by Eric Rohmann

My friend Rabbit means well.

But whatever he does, wherever he goes,

trouble follows.

“Not to worry, Mouse. I’ve got an idea!"

The plane was just out of reach. Rabbit said,

"Not to worry, Mouse, I’ve got an idea."

So Rabbit held Squirrel and Squirrel held me...

but then…

The animals were not happy.

But Rabbit means well.

And he is my friend.

"Thank you, Mouse!"

"Rabbit, stop hugging me! I can't see!"

Even if, whatever he does,

trouble follows.

"Not to worry, Mouse, I've got an idea!"
