pity
【源】
13世纪初期进入英语,直接源自古法语的pitet,意为“怜悯”;最初源自拉丁语的pietatem,意为“虔诚”。
【音】
['pɪti]
【义】
pity用作名词时,主要表示“同情;遗憾”。如:
I helped her out of love, not out of pity.我帮助她是出于爱,而不是出于同情。It's a pity that I have to get back to the grindstone.遗憾的是我不得不回去工作。
pity也常用作动词,表示“同情;怜惜”。如:
I pity anyone who has to feed a family on such a low income.我同情任何需要以如此微薄的收入养活全家的人。He does not want to be pitied.他不想要人家可怜他。
