我们在学习英语时，经常会碰到英式英语（British English，BE）和美式英语（American English，AE）之间的差异问题，也经常被两者间的差异弄得头晕脑胀。无奈，无论是英式的，还是美式的，该学的还是得学，否则很多话听起来单词好像都学过，但就是不知道什么意思，看起原声电影来就更是云里雾里的！
下面的这10个习语，如果你知道或者能猜出其含义，基本可以断定：你比较喜欢英式英语！
1、chalk and cheese
They are chalk and cheese. 你知道这句话的意思吗？其实，这句话在英式英语里采用了暗喻的修辞手法，明喻的表达为：They are as different as chalk and cheese.或者是They are like chalk and cheese.
也就是说，原句中的chalk and cheese其实就是different的意思：粉笔和奶酪虽然可能都是白的，但两者是完全两样东西。
2、Bob's your uncle!
这个难度大了，估计很少有人会知道这个习语的含义。
其实，该习语有这么个来源：英国著名的政治家、第一代贝尔福伯爵亚瑟·贝尔福（Arthur Balfour）因为叔叔罗伯特·塞西尔（Robert Cecil）是当时的英国首相（曾三任英国首相兼外交大臣），所以亚瑟可以毫不费力地在英国政府中担任诸多美差要职。因此，这个习语常来形容做事很容易就达到目的，即易如反掌。
3、for donkey's
for donkey's其实是for donkey's years的简略表达，其最初的表达可能是for dondey's ears，意思是“很长时间（a very long time）”。
比如：I've known her for donkey's. （我认识她很长时间了。）
4、something for the weekend
要猜出这个习语的意思，得往歪处想，呵呵。
其实，这是英国人特有的含蓄幽默，这个something就是condom，避孕套。比如说：It's like the days when men asked their barber for something for the weekend - no angler wants to be seen buying it.
要知道英国男人当初如果要买避孕套，只能私下里偷偷地在理发店里向理发师购买；这在当时是不怎么见得光的事情，所以都不希望被人看到；为了赚点外块，理发师们也常常会私下里主动问来店里的男人们是不是要买something for the weekend。
5、at Her Majesty's pleasure
习语中的Her Majesty指的是英国的王室，也可以用作At His Majesty's pleasure。这主要是因为在英国，最初某人是否要被监禁，都是由王室来决定的。
比如：His sharp practice cost him a term at Her Majesty's pleasure. （他的过激行为导致了最终的被判入狱。）
6、swings and roundabouts
该习语的完整形式为：to gain on the swings and to lose on the roundabouts，意思是：得失相当；有得有失。
比如：My individual record this season has been pretty good as I've certainly won more than I've lost, but like any sport it's all swings and roundabouts. （这个赛季我的表现很好，因为我赢的场次要远多于输的场次，但是就像其他运动一样，总归是有得有失的。）
7、horses for courses

8、get/have the hump
这是比较口语化的表达，意思是：不耐烦了。习语中的hump指的是驼峰，估计这就是这个习语表示不耐烦的原因吧，因为骆驼这种动物好像脾气都不怎么好的。
比如：To be honest, there was a time when I really got the hump with Spain. （说实话，我曾经一度非常讨厌西班牙。）

9、spend a penny
这是口语中的委婉表达，意思是：撒尿、小便。很形象的嘛！在外面上公厕，不就花个几毛钱的事儿嘛！

10、on the pull
这个猜起来比较费劲，一般词典里都查不到。
原来，该习语中的pull其实就是attraction的意思，整个习语的意思是：猎艳、寻求一夜情。
比如：I don't go out on the pull, and the realm of one-night stands seems to be beyond someone with my looks and personality. （我从不一时冲动去猎艳，一夜情对于我这种长相和性格的人来说，似乎是无法想象的。）
