19 terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, flying one into each of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, with the fourth crashing in rural Pennsylvania, assumedly when the passengers fought back against the terrorists.

Why

significant

It was the single greatest terrorist attack on US soil, if not ever, resulting in the deaths of 3,000 people and encouraged the US to ramp up the war on terror with invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan as well as domestic actions such as Homeland Security and the Patriot Act, which was just the beginning of a still current conflict.
