水手是第一个开始用“by and large”的人。这个短语的第一部分指的是航海术语full and by，意思是船在迎风航行。另一方面，当风从船只航行方向后面的某个点吹来时，就说它“large”，也就是指顺风而行。那么，by and large就是在说风是从任意方向来的，有前有后。
