Cutting-edge research findings on liver cancer

For this seminar, Dr. Zhang will introduce cutting-edge research findings on liver cancer. In the United States, liver cancer has one of the most rapidly increasing incidence rates among both men and women, coupled with a median survival of less than one year. Hence, identification of modifiable risk factors to prevent the development of liver cancer is one of the key priorities to reduce liver cancer morbidity and mortality. The etiology of liver cancer remains poorly understood in the US, where hepatitis infections are relatively low. One of Dr. Zhang’s research goals is to identify new modifiable risk factors for liver cancer to inform primary prevention strategies. In this seminar, Dr. Zhang will share some research findings on liver cancer. These findings have the potential to inform disease etiology, and strategies for liver cancer prevention.

Guest Professional background

Dr. Xuehong Zhang is a cancer epidemiologist with training in clinical medicine and nutrition. He obtained a doctoral degree in Epidemiology and Nutrition from the Harvard Chan School. His research goal is to decrease cancer morbidity and mortality, including:

  • Primary prevention: identify new etiological factors for both colorectal neoplasia and liver cancer; integrate new technologies into longitudinal cohorts to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying exposures and cancer associations.

  • Secondary prevention: conduct biomarker research to inform early detection and diagnosis of liver cancer by leveraging general population and clinical cohorts of patients of liver diseases.

  • Tertiary prevention: identify new dietary, lifestyle, and biological factors alone or in combination of existing treatments to improve quality of life among cancer survivors.

Dr. Zhang’s research has been primarily supported by the National Institutes of Health and American Cancer Society. His work has resulted in over 160 original research publications. He is passionate about teaching and mentoring, and he also offers guest lectures at the Harvard Chan School and several other institutions.
