A federal capital based on a new city that was centrally located between the north and south regions of the new nation was named after President George Washington.

Why

significant

While it was to be the new capital, it was not until John Adams presidency in 1797 that the Federal government took up residency in the new city along the Potomac.  It was decided that the capital city had to not only geographical between the two dominant regions but also on a new foundation to reflect the novelty of the nation and give sense of favoritism to an established population center.
