in the pipeline，不仅只有“在管道中”的意思，还有其他寓意

有些习语本身的意思不符合常理或存在语法上的错误，但习语就是习语，它们的寓意赋予了它们新的使命，例如：blue blood，come to a head 等等，例如：

blue blood:

The new student is very arrogant because his blood is blue.

这个新来的学生非常傲慢，因为他是名门出身。

Many blue blood children attend this private school.

come to a head:

The investigation came to a head last week when my colleague was found guilty of fraud.

但是有些习语不但本身有意思，而且还有其他寓意，比如 close the books 等等，例如：

close the books 译为“结账”，例如：

I do not like the idea of closing the books without meeting with the concerned head of the department and finding out why the payment cannot be made.

我不喜欢在不与有关部门负责人会面，也不知道为什么不能付款的情况下就结帐。

close the books 译为“结案”等，例如：

The lawyer closed the books of this case. There is no one remaining to be investigated.

律师结案了。已经没有人被调查了。

还有今天要介绍的 in the pipleline，它的本意是“在管道中”，但现实中更常用的是它的寓意“在进行中，在筹备中”，例如：

The project has been in the pipeline since forever. I am not sure if it will ever get completed.

这个项目一直在进行中。我不确定它是否能完成。

I am not working right now but have a few offers in the pipeline.

我现在不在工作，但有几份工作正在准备中。

She keeps telling me that her new book is in the pipeline but is she even writing something right now?

My mother's operation has been scheduled finally, it has been in the pipeline for a very long time.

所以在现实的阅读考试中，若遇到一些很奇怪的或不符合常理的组合，那么就要考虑是一个习语，要么认识，要么不认识，但很多习语是可以猜出它的寓意的，比如 add fuel to the flames 火上浇油，cost an arm and a leg 昂贵的、花很多钱的。
