CSS Shenandoah Surrenders
When |
Where |
Who |
What |
The Shenandoah was a converted passenger/transport ship purchased by the Confederacy in 1864 and tasked with disrupting Union maritime commerce. Over the next year the ship circumnavigated the globe and captured or destroyed over 55 Union vessels (mostly whaling ships) with plans to attack the port at San Francisco, California at the end of Summer 1865 before learning conclusively that the war had been over for four months. Determined to surrender to a neutral port, the ship sailed around South America to surrender in Liverpool, England.
Why
significant
Shenandoah was the only Confederate ship to travel around the world, was one of the most successful commerce raiders and the last Confederate unit to strike its colors with the defeat of the Confederacy. The officers and crew of the ship feared charges, and executions as pirates, but were paroled as regular servicemen of a defeated adversary shortly after their surrender.
