众所周知，在大型体育赛事上，有明显优势的运动员为了节省体力，偶尔会使用“放水”策略，那么这一策略用英文怎么说呢？
《南华早报》的标题使用了“ease into”：
National Games: Asia’s fastest man Su Bingtian eases into 100m semi-final.
全运会：亚洲飞人苏炳添轻松晋级100米半决赛。
cruise
cruise原本的意思是“a journey on a ship for pleasure, especially one that involves visiting a series”,也就是那种游历很多地方的航行、巡航和巡游。
cruise也可以作动词使用，意思是“航行、巡航和巡游”。这种观光模式非常悠闲，航行速度也很慢。所以cruise+to/into/through就有一个引申含义，即“在(比赛中)轻松取胜”，比如：
e.g. The Rams cruised to their sixth successive win this afternoon.
公羊队今天下午轻松获得六连胜。
coast
coast 最初的意思是“an area of land beside a sea(海岸/海滨/沿海地区)”，作动词用有一个意思是“靠着惯性滑行”，比如：
e.g. At the top of the hill , we just coasted down the other side.
在山顶，我们沿着另一侧的山坡顺势滑行。
既然是依靠惯性，那一定是毫不费力，所以后来可以指“轻而易举地获得”，尤其是轻松赢得比赛或者通过考试”。
e.g. I coasted through the two exams.
我轻松通过了两次考试。
但是这几个词表达了出“轻松”的味儿，但要表达“放水”的劲儿，还差点火候，我们再来看另外一则来自《南华早报》的新闻是如何表达的？
The 32-year-old Su, the Asian 100m record holder in 9.83 seconds, took his foot off the gas in the last 10 metres of his qualifying heat and crossed the line in 10.23, making him the second quickest qualifier.
32岁的苏炳添，100米亚洲纪录保持者(9秒83), 在预赛的最后十米有所保留的情况下，跑出了10秒23，预赛第二名的成绩。
文中使用“take one’s foot off the gas”来表达“放水”的概念，gas指的是gas pedal/油门踏板，所以“take one’s foot off the gas”字面意思就是“脚松开油门踏板”，那么比喻意思“放水”就很好理解了。
