听起来很疯狂?但我们的确可以做更多。#等你来#

上学的时候没好好学习制作网页,所以在2017年11月有想法建立一个网站之后,我就一直拖延到了昨天凌晨才更新了第一篇文章。

https://ger2017dialogue.wordpress.com

a.没有任何英文水平的要求,但需要佐证自己的专业水平与热情,所以要发送个人声明(personal statement)和一页纸的中文简历到miaoxx17@gmail.com,说明自己对地理教育领域有所了解、能说出自己相对擅长的两到三个领域;

After attending this year’s Geographical Association Annual Conference, I was always planning to do something for GA since it was a wonderful experience (and free to attend for students). I already submitted my feedback survey, but today one thing hit me. It made me realise “if not now, when; if not me, who?”.

So what is it? I call it the Language fault.

I cannot get any research result if I search geographical association in Baidu, not to mention search 地理协会 (the Chinese translation of geographical association).

Let’s start with some pictures I captured tonight(11/04/2018 22:50-22:53) to back up my findings:

I tried geographical association and its translation, and even add 英国(UK) in my last shot in Baidu. Is there something wrong with the search engine? With this thought in my mind, I tried Google. Of course it went on well with 'Geographical Association’, but it still leads no way towards Geographical Association when I use 地理协会。

I prefer to use the language fault rather than the language barrier, mainly because I assume Geographical Association(地理协会)’s absence in Chinese search engine is mainly due to no official translation nor branding.

This blog is not to criticise the GA but to offer my translation skills instead. As an advanced interpreter, I would love to translate the GA’s wikipedia page into Chinese (or update a Chinese version based on GA website), and also synchronise this introduction in Baidu’s baike(百科). That makes my first crazy idea move to a proposal: translate GA into Chinese.

The astonishing fact that GA has no Chinese resources can be solved from my active volunteering after requesting GA’s permission. But a brief introduction is not enough for getting Chinese peers appreciate GA’s amazing contribution in supporting geography teachers. That is why we need to bring in the second crazy idea.

Something a came to me on the train from London to Sheffield last Saturday. I was wondering if I can be a bridge to involve geography teachers in two countries to talk together. Similar to J.K. Rowling, I was wondering if I can use some figure to tell a story of geography teachers and their students, and how two geography teachers from different backgrounds battle each other. Maybe the iGeo competition can be the new Quidditch. That seems a bit too wild for now. The second crazy idea is more like a 2.0 version of this.

I would like to invite geography teachers in China and UK to aim at producing one lesson in next year. It can start with this question: which would you like to teach for Chinese kids? Or the easier version can be: Teachers from UK teach Chinese pupils lessons on UK, and teachers from China teach British students lessons on China. It could be carried out in Skype, but can go in real if got some funding. During the year to prepare, the two teachers can communicate from monthly meeting to weekly workshop. It is using the social media to celebrate the globalised teaching. I think KS3 pupils here in UK (who got to learn Mandarin) and junior secondary school students (from Foreign Language school) can benefit a lot from this collaboration promoted by their teachers. And I can imagine if the head and language teachers(Mandarin and English)  are willing to, we may promote a teacher exchange program.

Then the second crazy idea of bridging is to a proposal: Geography teacher on the Cloud/ Exchange.

Third crazy idea is called #askGE. I want to use the hashtag for soliciting questions on geography education from teachers and students. They can use this hashtag to ask one question they want to know from the peers. For example, one student teacher may ask could you tell me how you get in the route of teaching, one experienced teacher may ask how is your secret of balancing geography teaching and management work? It was, to some extent, inspired by the Teach-to-Teach meet, and we can extend it to Student-to-Student if teachers are willing to (and it can work with the second crazy idea too).

Oh, my… I said to myself, I can just spend 1h(22:50-23:50) a day on this. I already exceeded 20 minutes…I shall get some sleep now.

But before I go, here we are:

my three proposals.

1. Translate and update GA wikipedia page(English) into Chinese;

2. Support geography teachers to walk in others’ shoes by using social media;

3. Start a conversation for teachers and students to share their stories and concerns.
