English Version

Ode to Fuzhou

Tr. Wu Haohao

Three Mountais scrape the azure sky,

The river flows to the sun high.

Waves pat the islet with delight,

On steep cliffs of Yongtai, breezes sigh.

Small village foresaw Lin’s dreams bright,

At Mawei Harbor Shen’s boats lie.

Sander scents dance round the roof light,

Pupils are reading the lanes nearby.

Paraphrase

In the late Tang dynasty, Wang Shenzhi was nominated inspector of Fuzhou. He was promoted head of the secretariat in 907, the fourth year during the reign of Emperor Li Ye in the Tang dynasty. He was conferred King of Min in the same year. During his reign in Fuzhou, he established the outer city― Luo Cheng and  the double-walled imperial city, including the Wangshan Mountain (alias Pingshan), the Jiuxian Mountain (alias Yushan) and the Wushi Mountain in the map of Fuzhou. Then a moat was dug to center around most part of the city. Hence, Fuzhou got another name―“a city with a moat and three mountains” . Today I enjoy the scenery of mountains and waters in the city from a bird’s-eye view. “How beautiful Fuzhou is”, I can't help exclaiming.

The Langqi Islet is the fourth largest islet in Fujian province. It lies west to the Min River and east to the East Sea. Seagulls and egrets fly over its wide waters, which is dotted with sailboats. It’s an ancestral home to many Taiwanese. Mountains in southwest Yongtai county are high in altitude. Among which, the Yunding Peak (literally the Cloud-Top Mountain) is the highest. It attracts many tourists who come to see the sunrise. I zigzagged to the peak through a rocky path. The gentle breezes caressed my face. The dawn is like a maid, who blushes with something sweet.

Fuzhou is the hometown of Lin Zexu(1785-1850), a national hero in the Qing dynasty. Fuzhou inspired his ambition of reforming and improving the nation in his early years though he humorously called himself “an old rustic” at the old age. His daughter-in-law, Shen Baozhen(1820-1879) presided over Fuzhou Shipyard between 1867 and 1875. He initiated Nanyang Fleet for coastal defense along Jiangsu province and Zhejiang province. In memory of Shen, Mawei District has set up a Shipyard Cultural Museum in 1998. The shipyard has been renovated for visitors to recall the history.

Walking in the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, I saw residences of many celebrities, namely Lin Zexu, Shen Baozhen, Yan Fu, Chen Baochen, Lin Juemin, etc. They are antique in style with black tiles, grayish blue bricks, white walls, red gates on a background of banyan trees. All these buildings reflect the heroic feelings of these people. Some stone tablets are marks of the loyal, honest, righteous, knowledgeable names in Chinese history. Scents of sanders are filled in the air of ancient studies. Voices of young pupils are echoing in the classrooms. They are reciting classics. It can be seen that people in Fuzhou have inherited the tradition of diligence and industriousness from their ancestors. With the implementation of “One Belt and One Road”  initiative, the city is gaining prosperity in terms of culture, economy, science, technology, etc.
