英语语用文化系列8：有关“眼睛”的习语（eye idioms)

英语中有许多习语 (idiom)，对学习者来说既有趣，有时又令人费解。甚至还会闹出不少笑话。

那么，什么是习语呢？英语习语源远流长，其来源与历史、宗教信仰和独特的文化紧密相连。

简单来说，习语是一个词组（或一组词），它的意思不同于单独考虑的每个词。例如，keep your pants on ，它的意思并不是字面上所理解的“不要脱裤子”；这是一个习语，意思是“保持冷静，耐心等待”。

从本期的语用文化系列主题开始，我们时学教育的张老师将跟大家分享常用的英语习语。今天就先从和眼睛 eye有关的 idioms开始吧！

1) apple of one's eye :  掌上明珠，对某人很重要的人或事

例如：

As you can see, my father does a lot of gardening and those rose bushes are the apples of his eye.  He's so proud of them.

正如你所看到的，我父亲经常园艺，那些玫瑰丛是他的掌上明珠。他为它们感到骄傲。

I know I shouldn't pick favorites, but of all my grandchildren, my first granddaughter is the apple of my eye.

我知道我不应该选最喜欢的，但在我的孙辈中，我视第一个孙女为掌上明珠。

2) a bird's eye view：鸟瞰图，从某物上方看到的景象（就像鸟飞越某物时看到的景象）

例如：

From the top of the tower you can see a bird’s eye view of the whole city.

从塔顶你可以鸟瞰整个城市。

I'm scared to fly but when I do I love the bird's eye views of all the different cities below.

我害怕乘飞机，但当我飞行的时候，我喜欢鸟瞰下面所有不同城市的景色。

3) cry one's eyes out： 痛哭流涕；悲痛欲绝

例如：

Her dog died last week and she's been crying her eyes out every single day since then.

她的狗上周死了，从那以后她每天都悲痛欲绝。

My mom cried her eyes out when I left for college.

我去上大学时，我妈妈痛哭流涕。
