import和important有什么关系？

相信很多小伙伴都知道，import是“进口”的意思，与export（出口）相对，比如China Import and Export Fair中国进出口博览会。

import用作名词时，指产品、劳务等的“进口、输入、引进”这种行为，当加s用作复数时，imports表示“进口的、输入的产品或劳务等”。

常见搭配有这几种：进口额（import volume）、进口订单（import order）、进口关税（import tariff/duties）、进口壁垒（import barrier）、进口配额（import quota）、 （进口检疫）import quarantine等。

当用作动词时，常见的搭配有 import sth from ... into ... 表示“从一地进口、引进……到另一地”，比如：

• We used to import cars and electronic products mainly from Japan and South Korea。

我们过去主要从日本和韩国进口汽车和电子产品。

《经济学人》2021年2月11日刊为我们展现了 import 的另一种用法：

Partly it was a matter of timing: the full import of climate change and the lack of much success at curbing it, despite decades of effort, were beginning to sink into scientists’ minds.

在一定程度上，这是一个时间问题：尽管经过几十年的努力，气候变化的全面引入（全部含义）以及遏制气候变化的努力缺乏成效，已经开始深入到科学家的脑海中。

full import在这里是什么意思？很多人会想当然地认为就是“全面引进”的意思，用全面引进形容气候变化显然是不恰当的。

不知道大家有没有想过一个问题， import 与 important 这两个单词虽然一个表示“进口”，一个表示“重要的”，但拼写如此相近，难道就没有什么联系吗？

 important 源自拉丁语 importare （引入、运送、从国外引进；有重要意义的）的现在分词 importantem （重要的）。

而 import 则是直接源自拉丁语 importare ，15世纪初进入英国后先是作动词表示“表示、说明、带有或传达”，现在是“含有……的意思，意味着”的意思。

• 他的话意味着态度的转变。
  His words imported a change of attitude.

这个概念用作名词时，自然相应表示“意思、含意”。

• 很难弄清楚这份声明中的全部含意。
  It is hard to fathom the full import of this statement.

时间到了16世纪40年代， import 才开始用来表示“进口”。

然后到了16世纪80年代， import 又被用来表示“对……有重大关系的、对……重要”，对应今义“有关系、具有重要性”，比如：

• 她来不来都关系不大。
  It imports little whether she comes or not.

这个概念用作名词时，表示“重要性”，可以与 significance 互换。

比如《乐高大电影》中的台词：You have traveled far to be here for a moment of great import.
