The Truth about Pears
by Ye Dan
The oxbow ancient Yellow River at Dangshanruns like a fuse that ignites a melancholic sunset. But, it is the sweetness that lures me here,“The silt has finally filtered the bitter acidityof the Yellow River.” On my way here, at Sugar Pear Town*,where the country road is crammed with out-of-town trucks,I find myself stuck in traffic, endless vehicles queuing uplike gulag prisoners, and see pear orchard after pear orchardoutside the window. I park the car and walk into an orchard, amazed by the sunlight flowing between profuse leavesto reach the soil, far more elaborate than Klimt’spaintings. A pear farmer welcomes me.Under his intense care, all the pear branchessurrender to his custodial authority and evinceunrivaled sweetness, a canopy of mini dew pondsin the air, like a galaxy of new constellations.“Evolving from snow, they are cold and pure, the best traits from the best lineage. The sky is fertile, always bringing us farmers the gift of April snow.”“This celestial being undresses herself in the sky, before entering Earth’s magnetic field,au naturel, maidenly, to start a new life with Adonis.”Snow comes down like a martyr with a final wish.“In a great year like this, full of meteor showers, pears are delightfully sweet. If you climb up the tree, please remember two things: pears are to be picked by hand, unsoiled from a fall; in addition, the pear pickermust be chaste lest the pears become pulpy and saggy.”
