31
Thy bosom is endeared with all hearts,
Which I by lacking have supposed dead,
And there reigns love and all love's loving parts,
And all those friends which I thought buried. How many a holy and obsequious tear
Hath dear religious love stol'n from mine eye,
As interest of the dead, which now appear,
But things removed that hidden in thee lie.Thou art the grave where buried love doth live,
Hung with the trophies of my lovers gone,
Who all their parts of me to thee did give,
That due of many, now is thine alone.
Their images I loved, I view in thee,
And thou (all they) hast all the all of me.
Duncan Johns: The young man is universally loved, and in the congress of those who love him the lonely poet imaginatively recovers his own lost (dead) friends. (173)
Malone: ...such addresses (lovers) to men were common in Shakespeare's time, and were not thought indecorous. (255)
Booth: parts, things indicate sexual senses (183-4)
Vendler: Resurrection of Christ is the doctrine on which, in Christian literature, resurrection in any other form is based. (170)
Burrow: The dominant mood here is of a triumph over death through the friend, but there is also a faint suggestion (anticipating the jealous later in the sequence) that he poet has lost all his former lovers and thinks they are dead because they have switched their affections to the friend. (442)
