The United States purchased the Alaska Territory from the empire of Russia for $7.2 million dollars (about 2 cents an acre) . The Russians found governing the its far off Alaskan territory too expensive and difficult and realized it could be easily taken in a conflict with the US or the UK. After bartering for a decade, the US and Russians came to an agreement for sale.
Why
significant
While an expansion for US territorial ambitions, the move was not always looked at positively. Despite the natural resources, including gold discovery in 1896, it is argued that Alaska has never turned a profit on its initial costs and upkeep. A natural wonderland, its remoteness is its biggest detriment and asset.
