'Frozen 2’: A Franchise Cools Off

FRANCHISES DON’T lend themselves tostartling innovation. Or even freshness. “Frozen 2”—the sequel to one of Disney’s most successful excursions into animated musicals, bowdlerized fairy tales and Broadway spinoffs—is everything that the hardcore fan will want. It will delight many. It won’t surprise any. It may drive others still to the concession stand. Given the year at the box office, theaters owners will appreciate the revenue.

Virtually the entire team from the 2013 original is back for the new story, including directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck; producer Peter Del Vecho, and the songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. The original lineup is supplemented by several new characters voiced by Sterling K. Brown, Alfred Molina, Evan Rachel Wood and Martha Plimpton, among others. But the main characters will sound, and sing, exactly the same: Queen Elsa is played by Idina Menzel, her sister Anna by Kristen Bell, Kristoff the iceman by Jonathan Groff. Sven the reindeer has even less to say now than he did last time around.

What’s novel about “Frozen 2” is that there’s no romantic interest for Elsa, who is also not a Disney princess but a queen. She’s also magical while her sister Anna, with whom she reconciled in the first film, is not. Why? A flashback to a bedtime story told by their late father provides the little sisters a clue; the older Elsa will begin hearing voices calling her north. A hero’s journey is undertaken by Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Kristoff, during which the sisters will learn their parents’ origin stories and their own—and which gives the filmmakers the opportunity to construct some showstopper animated sequences, the pure visual delight of which is a credit to Disney’s CGI animators.
